Background

Telecom networks are entering a period of large changes. Major discontinuities took place
during the last decade such as the rapid development of high bandwidth networks enabled
by ATM and Gigabit Ethernet, the convergence of voice and data enabled by VoIP and the
introduction of high performance MPLS routers.

From now on, convergence is becoming predominant at the access level with fixed and mobile,
and in the core network with ATM, IP and MPLS. However, the wireless transport part
of the network has not progressed, as telecom incumbents so far had no incentive to change
a status-quo that was providing them with high revenues.

Several factors will facilitate and speed up a major change in this approach:

  • Explosion of the high speed cellular market (HSDPA, HSUPA) and of the broadband
wireless market (Wifi, WiMAX) and its increased geographical distribution
  • Maturity of new techniques such as MPLS, IP VPN, Layer 2 or 3 connectivity,
    now industry standards
  • Need for a new type of infrastructure, moving from multiple superimposed architectures,
co-located but serving different types of services, to a single mutualized infrastructure,
modular in functionality, capacity and coverage.

3Roam addresses these needs with a solution built for ease of deployment,
scalability and evolutivity

Company

3Roam is an innovative start-up, operating in the wireless infrastructure market space. 3Roam
designs, manufactures and sells equipement gear for next generation wireless backhaul
infrastructure. This enables operators to deploy a full IP transport network for the backhaul of
2G and 3G cellular networks,
or the mutualisation of fixed and mobile networks, allowing rapid
time to market, low network set-up and low operation costs. Operators can then offer better
network based value added services with much more agility, reliability and faster return on investment.
